Time gala 100. Jul 06, 2014 There been so much talk about how Steve Perry ended up in the band, so finally we talked with Robert Fleischman, the original singer and got his take on the situation.
After leaving the band, Perry returned home to Hanford, Calif., and started a new life not centered on music.“I stopped singing,” Perry tells Smith. “Completely, Tracy, I swear.”And moving forward, the once-rocker found love with psychologist Kellie Nash.Perry shared that the pair were connected through mutual friends, but at the time, sadly, Nash was battling late-stage breast cancer.
Nash died in October 2012 and Perry credits her for inspiring him to make music again.After mourning her death for two years, the former Journey member returned to the studio.Though the singer has rediscovered his love for music, don't expect Perry to take a step back and reunite with his former bandmates. The 69-year-old told Smith that he plans to keep moving forward.“I can only answer that question with the truth: that I love going forward. I love going to the edge of what’s next,” he says.Perry's new album, “Traces,” is out now.
drumsSteve Smith grew up in the Boston area and started playing drums at the age of 9 in 1963. He studied music at the Berklee College of Music from 1972 to 1976. In 1976, Steve left Berklee to tour and record with French jazz-fusion violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. In early 1978, he toured in Ronnie Montrose's 'Open Fire' instrumental rock group. That group was the opening act for Journey, and by September 1978, Steve had joined Journey. With Journey he went on to record Evolution, Departure, Captured, Escape, Frontiers, Raised On Radio and Trial By Fire. His playing is featured on the majority of Journey's Greatest Hits and Greatest Hits 2.
Since 1983, Steve has also been active as a bandleader, fronting his own jazz group Vital Information and has maintined a prolific career as a session musician, sideman, producer, educator and author.
Steve was voted '#1 Fusion Drummer' in the 2012 & 2015 Modern Drummer magazine readers poll and #1 Jazz Drummer 2015 in the UK magazine Rhythm. He was also voted '#1 All-Around Drummer' in the Modern Drummer poll for five consecutive years from 1987-1991. In 2001, Steve was named one of the 'Top 25 Drummers of All Time' by Modern Drummer. In 2002, he was voted into the magazine's 'Hall of Fame.' The 2008, 2009 and 2010 Drum! Magazine readers poll voted Steve #1 Jazz Drummer.
